Starting Your Mushroom Farm: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Choose a Location and Build your Grow Room You need a clean, well-ventilated room. It doesn't need windows, but you need to control:
- Temperature (25-30°C for oyster)
- Humidity (80-90%)
- Light (mushrooms need darkness for growing, light for fruiting)
Step 2: Prepare Substrate The most common substrate for oyster mushrooms is wheat straw. You need:
- Dry, chopped wheat straw (10-12 kg)
- Mushroom spawn (one packet per 10 kg straw)
- Garter or cocopeat fiber for packaging
Step 3: Pasteurize Straw Soak the straw in water for 4-6 hours, then boil it for 1-2 hours to pasteurize. Drain and mix with mushroom spawn.
Step 4: Pack And Incubate Pack the straw into polyethylene bags or plastic containers. Make small holes for ventilation. Leave in dark for 15-20 days for mycelium to colonize.
Step 5: Induce Fruiting After colonization, you need to trigger fruiting by lowering temperature and increasing airflow. The mushrooms will begin to pin head in a few days.
Step 6: Harvest Harvest when the caps begin to flatten and curl upwards. Oyster mushrooms are usually ready in 3-4 days after pinning. Twist and pull.
