The Ultimate Guide to Organic Fertilizers and Bio-Pesticides
The Ultimate Guide to Organic Fertilizers and Bio-Pesticides
With the growing demand for organic produce and the harmful effects of chemical inputs, more farmers are turning to organic fertilizers and bio-pesticides. This guide covers everything you need to know.
Why Choose Organic Inputs?
- Improve soil health long-term
- Reduce environmental pollution
- Safer for farmers and consumers
- Premium prices for organic produce
- Reduce dependency on expensive chemical inputs
Organic Fertilizers
1. Farm Yard Manure (FYM): Decomposed mixture of dung, urine, and bedding. Apply 10-15 tons/acre every 2-3 years. Improves soil structure and water holding capacity.
2. Compost: Decomposed organic matter (crop residues, kitchen waste). Rich in nutrients and beneficial microbes.
3. Vermicompost: Compost produced by earthworms. Very rich in nutrients and growth promoters. Apply 2-3 tons/acre.
4. Green Manure: Growing crops like dhaincha, sunn hemp and plowing them in. Adds nitrogen and organic matter.
5. Bone Meal: Rich in phosphorus. Good for root development.
6. Rock Phosphate: Natural source of phosphorus.
7. Wood Ash: Rich in potassium and micronutrients.
Bio-Pesticides
1. Neem Oil: Effective against aphids, whitefly, caterpillars. Mix 2-3 liter/acre with water and soap.
2. Garlic-Chili Spray: Grind garlic and chili, boil in water, strain and spray. Effective against many insects.
3. Trichoderma: Beneficial fungus that controls soil-borne diseases. Apply as seed treatment or soil application.
4. Beauveria Bassiana: Fungus that controls many insects.
5. Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt): Bacteria that controls caterpillars.
6. Pheromone Traps: Attract and trap specific pests.
7. Sticky Traps: Yellow for aphids/whitefly, blue for thrips.
How to Apply
For solid organic fertilizers, broadcast and incorporate into soil before planting.
For liquid bio-pesticides, use a sprayer for even coverage. Rent sprayers from OZAARE for PKR 800-2,500/day.
Organic farming is not just about replacing chemical inputs with organic ones - it's about building a healthy, living soil that produces healthy plants naturally. OZAARE supports organic farmers with equipment rental and access to organic input vendors.
